The film will be screened on Cine Culture on Thursday at 8.30 pm

‘A Braga’ tells the story of Marina and Juvenal, a couple who, while walking through the countryside, stop and take a photo in front of a strange old woman’s house. Enraged, she reveals herself as a witch and curses Juvenal. The film is considered a rare jewel for filmmaker José Mojica Maríns, better known as Zé do Caixão, who is making his debut in Brazilian cinema after 56 years of trying to complete two works. The film will be screened on Cine Culture on Thursday at 8.30 pm.

Considered the master of Brazilian horror, Zé do Caixao created the first version of ‘A Praga’ in 1967, but the work was lost in a fire. In 1980, the filmmaker decided to shoot it, but due to financial problems, he did not complete it. Years later, in 2007, the first version, which had been lost until then, was discovered by producer Eugenio Buppo, who completed the work by inserting new scenes but following the initial idea. Unfortunately Zé do Caixão did not have the chance to see the final version of his work, as he suffered from bronchial pneumonia in 2020.

To open the film, the short film ‘The Last Plague of Mojica’ directed by Cédric Fanti, Eugenio Puppo, Matheus Sundfeld and Pedro Junqueira describes the process of recovering and ending the ‘Plague’.

Sessão Vitrine is a project for the joint distribution of Brazilian films in commercial cinemas and digital platforms, carried out by distributor Vitrine Filmes. The program hosts sessions with discussions, with the main objective of screening films at low cost, promoting the democratization of Brazilian cinema, and promoting the creation of an audience for cinema. Cine Cultura has been a partner of Sessão Vitrine since 2017, and in this project the film ‘Canção ao Longe’ explores Jimina’s identity and her place in the world. The young woman wants to leave the home she shares with her mother and grandmother, and she feels out of place. The work raises questions of class, family, heritage, race and gender.

Tickets to see this week’s movies are available at Cine Cultura, located at Fundação Cultural de Palmas and Espaço Cultural José Gomes Sobrinho, BRL 15.00 for the full movie and BRL 7.50 for the banned half. Cine Cultura Palmas reserves the right to change the schedule without prior notice.
