Android users in the UK can pay for apps and services in the Play Store through the billing system used (and provided) by Google. The tech giant also offered to provide alternatives to developers in the region.
Almost a year ago, the country’s CMA (Competition and Markets Authority) began investigating the technology company’s payment system for purchases on its app store. The investigation comes after the CMA found that Apple and Google maintain an “effective duopoly” in mobile device ecosystems. And the Play Store will lead to “higher prices and reduced options for Android users.”

Changes to the Play Store
The CMA is currently seeking feedback on Google’s proposals – and will accept them until May 19. Based on public feedback, if the company decides to develop legal proposals, developers can offer a payment system of their choice. This is known as DOB (Developer Only Billing) in the country. They can offer an alternative payment method with Google – that’s UCB (“User Billing Choice”).
Google will still charge developer service fees, which typically run between 15-30% of your revenue – a little less than usual. When developers don’t provide Google Play billing, their service fee is reduced by 3%. If they choose to offer an alternative payment method with Google and the customer chooses to do so, their service fee will be reduced by 4%.

In 2022, Google allowed Android app developers to use third-party payments in several European Union (EU) countries. Although the fee is reduced if payment is made using an alternative billing method, regardless of the billing method chosen by the user, the company also charges a service charge on the economy block.
Google says its commitments will be released in stages if the CMA decides to accept them. The ability to add non-Google billing will initially be available to non-game app developers. And game app developers will be able to add alternative billing systems by October 2023.
