A study conducted by researchers at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark shows that consuming a drink that many people enjoy can bring health benefits. Café au lait has shown a potential anti-inflammatory effect.

Coffee is rich in polyphenols, a well-known antioxidant. Amino acids, which make up proteins, are abundant in milk. It was the relationship between these two components that scientists decided to study.

The results were published Monday (30) in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

The group of researchers investigated the anti-inflammatory effect of combining polyphenols with proteins by triggering synthetic inflammation in cells of the immune system.

Some cells received multiple doses of polyphenols that interact with an amino acid. Others received only polyphenols, while a group of cells got none.

In the end, they realized that immune cells that received polyphenols and amino acids (the equivalent of coffee with milk) were twice as effective in fighting inflammation as those that received only polyphenols (coffee).

In the study, we showed that when a polyphenol interacts with an amino acid, its inhibitory effect on inflammation in immune cells is increased. As such, it is clear that this combination could also have a beneficial effect against inflammation in humans. Further investigation, initially in Next, we hope to obtain research funding that will allow us to study the effect in humans,” commented Professor Marian Nyssen Lund, from the Department of Food Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, who led the study, in a statement.

The paper’s lead author, Professor Andrew Williams, of the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in the College of Health and Medical Sciences, said the findings pave the way for more advanced trials.

“It has made us more interested in understanding these health effects in more detail. So the next step will be to research the effects in animals.”

A study conducted by the USP School of Public Health (University of São Paulo) in 2017, on 550 people, in the city of São Paulo, showed that a daily cup of coffee can be beneficial for heart health.

And it all has to do with polyphenols. Although it is found in fruits and vegetables, coffee “ends up having a larger nutritional contribution because its daily consumption is more frequent,” researcher Andrea Miranda said at the time.

“About 70% of the polyphenols that Sao Paulo residents eat come from coffee,” he said.

Polyphenols delay the oxidation of healthy chemicals in our bodies. In this way, you protect the organs and tissues from damage or damage.
