A competition aims to find the ugliest dog in England, but one keeper is already convinced his pet will take the prize. The title may be a bit dubious, but the “ugly dog” contest managed to attract hundreds of applicants.

Among them: Peggy, a pug-Chinese crested cross, Roger, a pug-toy poodle cross, and Marnie the French bulldog.

Holly Middleton’s little Peggy is a hairless pup with hair on her head and her tongue always sticking out.

The author tells the BBC that she adopted Becky when she was six months old. Middleton, 36, has entered the competition as a pet before. She also said Peggy always had this “unusual” look: “It’s always like that, but it doesn’t stop her from doing anything. She can eat and drink. Her tongue goes into her mouth and it doesn’t stay there.”

The contest is sponsored by a printing company that offers the winner a trip to the pet store for a “makeover” and photo shoot. The winner of the Ugly Dog Contest is expected to be announced in February.

“We have some pretty ugly dogs here in Britain and we hope to celebrate the best of them with our competition,” said Matt Dahan, founder of Parrot Print.

In the competition, the seven final dogs, Marnie, Winston George, Peggy, Jazz, Bella, Roger and Milo, are in the running for the prize. Registration started in November 2022 and ended on December 31.

“We received hundreds of submissions and these seven were the ones that made our eyes hurt when we looked at them. We believe our competition celebrates the best of the UK’s ugliest dogs,” said Dahan, founder of the print shop.
