Four capixabas and two Carioca over 50s are part of the team that will represent Brazil at the Regatta World Cup in Hawaii. They are training at Curva da Jurema, in Vitoria, for the competition taking place August 8-16 at Dorney Lake in Windsor, England.
Carla Capucho, 55, Luciana Coelho, 59, Marcia Amorim, 58, Andrea Litt, 55, Vera Cabral, 62, and Christiana Gomez, 54, play amateur sports and do not live by sports.
Thus, the team consists of six women: a teacher, a journalist, an accountant, an engineer, a justice officer and a doctor.
For Luciana Coelho, 59, in addition to all the connections with the sea and nature that the sport provides, the competitive environment was a motivating factor for staying in a Hawaiian canoe for eight years.
“It is very attractive to be in an environment where you can push your limits and motivate you. The challenge is a motivation for me to be competitive,” says the journalist.
For teacher Carla Capucho, 55, teamwork was the most captivating thing about her canoe in Hawaii.
“If there is no union, I care about each other, and the boat does not move. Our team is very united and we care about each other outside and inside the boat.”
From Niteroi (RJ), accountant Marcia Amorim, 58, reveals that the sport changed her life. Since I started rowing six years ago, I’ve lost nearly 30kg.
“I was always a work-focused person, and for a long time, I forgot to take care of my health. By medical recommendations, I had to take care of myself, but I never found a sport I liked. Until one day a friend called me to row, and since then I have never stopped “.
The team’s coach, Thacia da Silva Marquez, 37, has revealed the completion of a three-month plan of physical, technical and tactical preparation for sprint events (speed), with distances of 500 and 1,000 metres.
According to her, the team is ready to compete on an equal footing against countries that are strong powers in the sport, such as Australia and New Zealand.
“They are ready to give their best performance ever. In the state, they have performed better than the athletes ten years younger than them.”

– The state will be represented at the Hawaii Kayaking World Cup, in London, by the Women’s Master 50+ Team of the Makaira Paddle Club, the state’s only team in the tournament.
The team that goes to London for the World Championships is the current champion of Espirito Santo in this category.
– Team Master 50+ from countries such as Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Singapore and the United States will face two Master 50+ teams from Brazil and athletes from Hawaii, a US region participating as if it were a country.
The World Cup will be held from August 8-16, 2022.
