Liz Truss said on Thursday she was stepping down as prime minister after she was ousted by her economic plan, which rocked markets and split her Conservative Party six weeks after she was appointed.

The election for the new leadership ends next week.

Speaking outside his 10 Downing Street office, Truss admitted he had lost faith in his party and could not deliver on the promises he had made while running for the Conservative leadership.

“Given the circumstances, I recognize that I will not be able to continue in the term of office to which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to Her Majesty the King to announce my resignation as leader of the Conservative Party.” she said.

“This morning I met with Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 Committee. We agreed that a leadership election would be held next week. This would ensure we are on track to deliver our financial plans and maintain economic stability. Our country’s national security”.
