Scotland’s First Minister and leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), Nicola Sturgeon, said on Monday that independence could improve relations with the rest of the UK and was “essential” to a return to the European Union (EU).
“Some people see independence as turning our backs on the rest of the UK. It’s not – it’s about reshaping our relationship as equals.”The leader was speaking at the closing of the SNP congress in the port city of Aberdeen in north-east Scotland.
According to Sturgeon, “independence is the best way to protect the partnership on which the United Kingdom is founded – a voluntary partnership of nations”, accusing “aggressive unionism” of undermining the union.
“Westminster’s rejection of Scottish democracy. Full-frontal attacks on autonomy. A fundamental lack of respect. This is causing tension between us and damaging relationships.”complained the Scottish leader.
On the other hand, the representative said, “Freedom is essential if we want to return to the European Union”.
On 28 June, the First Minister of Scotland announced her intention to hold a “consultative” referendum on the British territory’s independence on 19 October 2023, despite opposition from the British government.
