uA group of researchers at Aston University, UK, suggests that eating the fruit regularly helps prevent depression. On the other hand, an unhealthy diet and a lack of nutrients has consequences for mental health.

“Both fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, fiber, and essential micronutrients that promote optimal brain function, but these nutrients can be lost during cooking,” researcher Nicola Jean, one of the study’s lead authors, said in a statement.

According to the study of 428 British adults, with an average age of 40, the frequency of consumption was also shown to be more important than the total amount of fruit eaten throughout the week. Survey participants ate, on average, two servings of fruit per day. Those who ate more than two meals reported fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety and showed greater well-being.

On the other hand, those who ate snacks high in salt and low in nutrients had higher levels of anxiety, depression, and stress.

The World Health Organization recommends daily consumption of at least 400 grams of fruits and vegetables, which is equivalent to five servings of these foods.
