US Chief of Diplomacy Anthony Blinken said on Tuesday (14) that the US government is actively working on preparing “alternatives” to the agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue with its allies in case negotiations fail to salvage the agreement.
“It will soon be too late, Iran is not yet committed to real negotiations,” Blinken said at a press conference in Jakarta, following the speech given by European countries involved in negotiations with Tehran in Vienna.
“Without rapid progress, the agreement on the Iranian nuclear file will turn into an empty shell,” he added.
“What we are seeing so far is that Iran is wasting valuable time defending positions that are incompatible with a return” to the 2015 agreement, the secretary of state stressed.
“We are actively discussing alternatives with our allies and partners,” he added.
After five continuous months, negotiations to save the Iran nuclear deal resumed on 29 November in Vienna.
Negotiations bring together countries that are still part of the 2015 agreement (the United Kingdom, France, Germany, China, Russia and Iran).
The US government, which unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018 and reimposed sanctions on Iran under Donald Trump, is indirectly involved.
The Vienna agreement offered Iran the lifting of part of the sanctions that affected its economy in exchange for a drastic reduction in its nuclear programme, which has been subject to strict UN oversight.
