London, UK- British tennis player Joanna Konta, ranked 4 in the world, announced her retirement at the age of 30, due to recurring problems with her right knee.
Without playing since August, it has fallen to 113th in the world in the latest WTA rankings.
“My playing career is coming to an end and I am so grateful for what it has been like,” the tennis player wrote in a statement posted on her Twitter account.
Born in Australia to Hungarian immigrant parents, Konta has played throughout her career in the semi-finals of three of four Grand Slam tournaments, and in the quarter-finals of the US Open.
In June, with her Championship win in Nottingham, she became the first British woman to win a competition in her own country since Sue Parker in 1981.
