Brazil has just been recognized by the World Bank as the seventh country with the highest level of maturity in digital government in the world. The score was measured in the Government Technology Maturity Index 2020, a rating that assesses the current state of digital transformation of public service in 198 economies around the world.
In the Americas, there is no other country in the future, including the United States and Canada. Among the top ten, Brazil is the only country with a population of over 100 million. This achievement is largely due to the progress of the gov.br platform, which today has more than 115 million users, more than half of Brazil’s population – in January 2019, the number was 1.8 million. gov.br allows individual access to thousands of digital services and facilitates access to information and the citizen-government relationship.
“This result is due to our focus on gov.br, to everyone’s commitment to fighting bureaucracy, modernizing public administration and digital transformation of the state,” confirms the Minister for Elimination of Bureaucracy, Administration and Digital Government of the Ministry of Economy, Cayo Mario Pais de Andrade. “By adopting this strategy, the entire country has taken a huge leap forward, including tackling the Covid-19 pandemic through digital public services.”
The World Bank’s Government Technology Maturity Index ranked 198 global economies in four aspects: support for key government systems; improve service delivery; integration of citizen participation; and encouraging the digital skills of individuals in the public sector, an appropriate legal and regulatory system, training and innovation. Brazil has shown progress in these four areas – only 43 countries have achieved a performance that the World Bank considers “very high”. Our country has exceeded the average for the so-called “Leaders at GovTech” in all items evaluated.
Brazil has provided digital solutions with a huge impact on the population, such as: emergency assistance, Meu INSS, unemployment and unemployment insurance for domestic employees, digital work and pass cards, and PIX. According to the World Bank, there are aspects such as encouraging innovation in public service, the vision of the digital government strategy and the role of gov.br as a citizen-centric platform.
Before Brazil, there are only: South Korea, Estonia, France, Denmark, Austria and the United Kingdom. “We put services in the palm of the hand of Brazilians, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The strategy of digital government indicates that the state simplifies the relationship with citizens, through transparency, efficiency and trust in government actions”, assures the Minister of Digital Government, Luis Felipe Monteiro.
