A “diaper tax” could be levied in the UK to stem the tide of millions of disposable diapers that pollute thousands of tons of recyclable materials.

As mountains of non-recyclable materials are dumped on landscape sites, parents should switch to greener alternatives, experts encourage.

A British government source told the Daily Mail news website that the tax would be included in measures considered to reduce plastic waste. Plastic plates, cutlery and cups may be banned in the UK under government schemes to reduce waste and increase the use of more sustainable options under environmental law.

The goal of the diaper line is to encourage parents and caregivers to switch to fabric versions or biodegradables.

According to the charity Wrap, 3 billion disposable diapers are thrown away each year, which is 2-3 percent of household waste in the UK.

Keep Britain elegant Alison Octane-Newton said disposable diapers are completely plastic and cannot be recycled.

People don’t know this yet. We estimate that millions of people recycle these diapers and cause more pollution.
