After falling seriously ill from the virus, 34-year-old Matthew Keenan authorized the release of his photo to encourage people to get the Covid vaccine.
A man skeptical of coronavirus vaccines has died in a UK hospital, two weeks after a doctor posted a picture of him sitting on a hospital bed.
Matthew Keenan, from Bradford, has allowed Lien Chen to post a photo of himself wearing an oxygen mask, as a plea for people to get vaccinated. Cheney, a pulmonologist, said the 34-year-old told her he “wanted to go back in time.”
“Matthew agreed with me to share his story. He is 34 years old, a football coach and father. He was admittedly skeptical about the vaccine until he contracted the virus, and wanted to be able to go back in time. Turning 40. Matthew is fighting for his life…save your life,” Chen posted on Twitter on July 11 with a photo of the patient.
The doctor explained that Keenan was using a CPAP oxygen machine. A few days ago, on July 2, he posted on Facebook that he had tested positive for the coronavirus.
According to Shane, who works for the Bradford Hospitals Teaching Foundation Trust, Keenan was using non-invasive ventilation, one step away from treatment in an intensive care unit.
He told the BBC that the 34-year-old hoped sharing his story would encourage people to get vaccinated. In Bradford, 72% of adults had taken the first dose of the vaccine and 57% had taken the second dose by July 25.
The United Kingdom has one of the highest vaccination rates per 100 inhabitants. But there are people who refuse to get the vaccine.

Keenan, who was a well-known football coach in the city, has been honored with several honours. A spokesman for Bradford Sunday Football Association said: “Matthew was a great man, a gentleman, a true legend, he always had time for everyone, even if he didn’t know the person, and he always made everyone smile. Football.”
Fellow Keenan Football League, Akif Khan, said he “always did his best for everyone”. On Facebook, mental health support group Speak In Club wrote: “So saddened to hear of the passing of my colleague Matthew Keenan. Honestly one of the best people you could meet. He lit up everywhere he went. Brother. You’ll never walk alone.”
The rap group Bad Boy Chiller Crow, of which Keenan was a fan, wrote: “Bradford has lost a true legend. RIP, you will always be remembered in our hearts until we meet again.”
