WhatsApp (Android, iOS) announced new features for voice and video calls, on Wednesday, the fourteenth of this month, as the application increased the potential number of participants, in addition to making it easier to silence and send messages during calls, as well as sharing them.

Video calls now support up to 32 simultaneous participants, the same limit as voice calls. Until then, there was a limit of up to eight people on video calls.

Also new: it is now possible to click on the participant’s name to increase the audio and video feed, to mute the audio, or to send a private message to the user while participating in the call, which can be shared via a link.

The update also brought changes to the design of the app during calls. It makes it easier for someone to see who is talking if the camera is off. Banner notifications appear when a new participant joins the call.

It’s in beta testing, and is slated for release in 2023. It’s a scaled-down version of video calling that lets you perform other activities on the device during video conferencing.
