Oslo, Norway- The Oslo Court announced that John Carew, the former Aston Villa player, was sentenced on Wednesday to 14 months in prison for serious tax fraud in Norway.

Following his conviction, the former attacker failed to declare to his country’s supervisory authority approximately NOK 12.8 million (about €1.2 million) in income between 2014 and 2019, as well as a personal wealth of Kroner 300 million (€29 million), being tax resident in Norway.

During this period, Caro informs the authorities that he resides in the UK and, therefore, there is no need to pay taxes in his home country.

With his passing through Lyon, Aston Villa, Besiktas and West Ham, the Norwegian also received a fine of 540,000 crowns (equivalent to 52,000 euros).

Asked by AFP, the Oslo court specified that it remains to be determined how Karo will pay his sentence, as the accused will be able to appeal the verdict.

Throughout the trial, prosecutors established that the former Norway national team striker stayed in the country for 183 days during this time period, making him a subject tax resident in that territory.

Carew told the court he was only following the advice of his former agent.

“The court concluded that he acted with gross negligence, but not with intent. We’ve always maintained that,” his attorney Beritt Reiss-Andersen said in a statement, adding that the defendant “wanted to make amends” and that she and her client would.
