Tropiquarium, in Servion, Switzerland, has a conservation program for endangered species, including the Galapagos giant tortoise (black colonoid). In recent days, staff at the animal center have celebrated the birth of two cubs: one black as the parents and the other a rare albino specimen.

The mating success rate is only 2% to 3% for this species, and the presence of albinism is rare in turtles, with approximately one case per 100,000 individuals, making the calf even more special. “This is the first time in the world that a Galapagos albino tortoise has been born and kept in captivity. No albino has been observed in the wild,” the zoo said in a statement.

The parents of the little turtle are heavyweights: the mother weighs about 100 kg and the father is 180 kg. Cubs weigh about 50 grams at birth and fit in the palm of the hand.

On social media, the Tropiquarium team shared photos of the albino puppy and celebrated: “We’re in Heaven!”.
