New UK indoor sprint champions crowned

Daryl Netta and Rhys Prescod were crowned champions in the 60m at the UK Indoor Championships in Birmingham.

Nita continued her good start to the season by winning in 7.17 seconds over Asha Phillip and Scotsman Alesha Reece.

Prescod ran 6.54 seconds, his fastest time of the year, to defeat Jeremiah Azo and Eugene Amo Dadzi.

Neita and Prescod hit personal bests with a 60m win in Berlin last week and produced two more impressive performances at the Utilita Arena.

Nita said: “I came here to get the gold and set some decent times, and I think I did today.

“It was good to train for what I’m going to do in Europe, three rounds in one day and ensure physical preparation. I feel really good. Expect fast times.”

London teammate Prescod added: “I had a personal best this year and came away as a national champion.

“It was a really good day in the office. The first race was great, the second was on fire and I brought more heat into the finals.

The top two players from each event in Birmingham will be selected for next month’s European Indoor Championships in Istanbul.

David King and Cindy Simper won gold in the 60m hurdles. King ran 7.62 seconds to claim his third British indoor title, while Semper bested Marley Jessup and Alicia Barrett with a time of 8.10 seconds.

Charlie Myers jumped 5.05m to win the men’s pole vault title and Jade Eve claimed victory in the women’s event by completing 4.35m.

Reynolds Panego achieved a winning jump of 7.85m to equal his personal best and take the men’s long jump title.

Mary Elcock won the women’s triple jump. Lily Holland stood her best jump of 12.71 metres, but Elcock took the gold on count back.

Elcock said, “This is my first indoor championship and I’ve only been jumping three times for a year, so I’ve been jumping the deep end!”
