At a press conference after a meeting with South American presidents ended, Lula once again advocated creating a Mercosur currency.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) once again defended the creation of a single currency in Mercosur at a press conference after a meeting with South American heads of state, held in Itamaraty Palace This Tuesday (5/30).

During a press conference following the meeting, the Brazilian president stated that it was not right to “have to buy dollars to sell my products.”

“You know I advocate the idea that we cannot continue to trade dollars. We have to build a currency between our two countries, so why can’t Brazil and Argentina trade our currencies?[…] So, that’s a discussion I want to have because frankly, if we don’t, trade becomes increasingly difficult, and having to buy dollars to sell my products just isn’t right,” the president pleaded.

Lula had already announced his support for creating a common currency for trade transactions during the meeting’s opening speech.

Initiating the speech, the Brazilian representative recalled the pioneering role played by the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) in the integration of South American nations and the importance of organizations such as the Community of Latin American and Caribbean Nations (Celac).

South America has, once again, an opportunity to walk the path of unity. You don’t have to start over. Unasur is a collective origin. Let us remember that, in fact, seven countries remain full members. It’s important to resume your build process, but in doing so it’s necessary to critically assess what didn’t work and take transitions into account.”

But Lula thought about the need to take new initiatives to expand the activity of the meeting of states.

It would be a mistake to confine the activities to government departments. Engaging civil society, trade unions, businessmen, academics and parliamentarians will give consistency to our efforts. said PT candidate.
