France announces new support for farmers after protests

The executive had already proposed 70 initiatives at the beginning of the year, marked by farmers' protests. But the new measures announced, in a statement, by Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, are Treasury support, such as obtaining loans that can reach 75 thousand euros, and accelerating irrigation and water storage projects.

The government intends Reducing cash flow to farmers, thanks to a plan implemented through the Public Investment Bank Bpifrance, “worth 100 million euros”, an operation that involves granting “direct cash loans of up to 75 thousand euros” and guaranteeing “commercial bank” loans of up to 200 thousand euros for holdings Faltering agriculture.

According to the CEO, These measures “identify and complement the 67 commitments officially approved on January 26, 2024, and complete the additional work requested by the President of the Republic at the opening of the 2024 Agricultural Expo.”.

Also on the table is a plan to support some of the areas most affected by drought. The government also wants to have a new version of Ecophyto ready by May, a plan to reduce pesticides that the sector has objected to.

It is also worth noting, among the proposals contained in the statement, Agricultural pension reform, the technical implementation of which has been discussed, will be implemented in 2026.

The Young Farmers' Union and the National Confederation of Agricultural Operators' Unions have welcomed these measures and promised to be “extremely vigilant” to monitor the implementation of these measures.

The two unions said, in a joint memorandum reported by the French press, “They now consider that the phase of action following the mobilization that began last November has come to an end and that the third phase of monitoring the concrete implementation of each of the measures has begun.”. The unions also call on “all representatives to be responsible in translating all these developments into laws that are currently under analysis or will come.”

Let us remember that in January, French farmers took to the streets demanding more support from the executive. The protests lost their strength after the government announced on February 1 a set of measures in this sector.
