    Hugging Face chief urges OpenAI to embrace greater transparency after unprecedented AI-powered cyber incident

    The chief executive of artificial intelligence company Hugging Face has called for sweeping changes across the AI industry following what is believed to be the first autonomous cyber attack carried out by an AI system. The incident has renewed debate over the safety of advanced AI models, with growing calls for stronger oversight, transparency and collaboration between technology companies.

    He called on OpenAI to adopt what he described as “radical transparency” by making available the records generated during the incident.

    “Let’s release the traces from the ‘rogue’ agents so the entire research community can study what happened.”

    Delangue believes that broader access to the technical data would enable researchers to strengthen AI security and reduce the likelihood of similar attacks in future.

    Call for greater investment in AI cyber defences

    Alongside calls for greater openness, Delangue proposed increased investment in defensive AI research.

    He suggested that OpenAI should commit $100 million in computing resources to support the Hugging Face community in developing stronger cybersecurity tools using both open-source and proprietary AI models.

    “Let’s commit $100M in compute from OAI to help the Hugging Face community build powerful cyber defenses with the best open and closed models.”

    His comments, shared on the social media platform X, were posted after travelling to San Francisco for discussions with OpenAI regarding the incident.

    Nvidia launches new AI security alliance

    Industry collaboration aims to strengthen cyber resilience

    Shortly after Delangue’s public statement, Nvidia announced the creation of the Open Secure AI Alliance, a new industry coalition focused on improving AI security and cyber defence.

    The initiative brings together several major technology companies, including Adobe, CrowdStrike and Hugging Face.

    In announcing the alliance, Nvidia said the recent Hugging Face incident demonstrated the growing need for advanced AI systems that can support cybersecurity professionals.

    “The recent Hugging Face security incident delivered a clear reminder: cyber defenders need open, frontier agentic systems for self-defense.”

    Nvidia also argued that publicly available AI tools had played an important role in analysing the incident, suggesting that open technologies can help security researchers respond more effectively to emerging threats.
