On Thursday, the Venezuelan government said it had bought the broadcasting rights Tokyo Olympics. The country had said on Wednesday that payment for this purpose had been blocked due to international sanctions.

“We want to announce Venezuela’s first victory in the Olympic Games, because the IOC has confirmed that Venezuela will officially broadcast the opening ceremony, competitions, closing ceremony and all the details,” said the Minister of Sports. Mervyn Maldonado, in Japan Connection to State Television.

Maldonado explained that the Olympics will be broadcast on the open channel of state radio TVES and “from there [por] All sources of information in our country.

He stressed that, “from tomorrow, July 23 until Sunday, August 8, you will enjoy every competition for our national delegation.”

Payment for broadcast rights has been banned, according to President Nicolas Maduro, who on Wednesday denounced the “financial harassment of banks”.

Maduro’s government has been the target of international sanctions led by the United States, which does not recognize him as Venezuela’s president after being re-elected in a disputed election in 2018.

These measures impede the nation’s access to the international financial system. This has already happened with the blocking of part of the payment for access to the World Health Organization’s Covax system for the purchase of vaccines against covid-19.

According to sources close to the deal, Venezuela paid $2.5 million (13 million Brazilian reais) for limited rights to the most unusual games in the history of the Olympic Games, which will take place between July 23 and August 8.

The South American country, plunged into the worst economic crisis in its modern history, is participating in the Games with a delegation of 43 athletes and betting on the victories of athletes such as Yulimar Rojas, the multiple world champion in the triple jump.
