Street Fighter, released in 1994, was not well received by critics or gamers at the time. It is considered bad to this day, joining the 1993 Mario movie among the worst game adaptations. However, surprisingly the production still generated millions of yen for Capcom.

Yes, the film is still profitable for the IP holder 30 years later. This information came during a meeting with shareholders last week. This profit amounts to a few tens of millions of yen per year, which is essentially a few hundred thousand dollars. We don't have exact values, unfortunately.

Although it is a few hundred thousand dollars per year, this is a significant amount considering the release time as well as the production quality of the Street Fighter feature. But this highlights how powerful game mods are, especially nowadays with the big hits.

Game modifications are on the rise

We already have several examples currently: The Last of Us and Fallout series, as well as the Mario and Sonic movies. We have other examples, but they did not reach the same level of success as we mentioned, such as the Mortal Kombat films, Uncharted, Gran Turismo, the Halo series, and others.

Capcom capitalized on the huge success of Street Fighter 2, the first version of which was released (since many others came later) in 1991. Therefore, the film depicts the characters of that version of the game. However, the characterization was very simple and this meant that some characters bore no resemblance to their originals from the game.

This is something the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie did better, even though it wasn't a huge box office hit or hit either. But you knew who the characters were because of the good treatment of the actors.

Capcom is still interested in bringing in a new Street Fighter movie. The studio closed a partnership with Legendary Pictures last year, but ended up losing the film's directors days ago, as they couldn't adjust to the schedule of the IP owner, who was in a rush to release the film.

In addition to Street Fighter, Capcom has also invested in Resident Evil features, resulting in several not-so-well-received films, as well as CG features, which are closer to the games. Additionally, Monster Hunter also had a movie starring Resident Evil's Milla Jovovich.
