    The UK has just opened its first commercial laboratory aimed at helping test self-driving cars using 5G networks and satellite technologies. This initiative falls within the framework of a program supported by the telecommunications company O2 and the European Space Agency.

    The space, named Darwin SatCom Lab, will be used by companies that will be invited to test connectivity solutions for connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs). In the first test, two Renault Twizy electric cars will be used.

    Both are equipped with lidar sensors so they can be controlled directly from the laboratory and directed by the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in England – where the space is located. Derek McManus, O2's chief operating officer, said the lab is “the next step in putting autonomous vehicles on the roads and greening the UK's transport network”.

    According to Joanna Hart, development director for Harwell's aerospace division, the lab “offers companies a vision of the future and the opportunity to harness the power of 5G and satellite communications to turn their ideas into commercial reality.” She also adds that the scope is open for international companies to put their theories into practice.

    Environmentally friendly technology

    Another project is also underway on campus that uses lidar sensors to track carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles. Using satellite images, it is possible to see areas passed by vehicles and monitor local biodiversity.

    This allows you to calculate emissions savings when following different routes based on carbon sequestration from nearby trees.
