247 – Colombian President, Gustavo Petro, announced on Saturday (2) that his country will not sign new contracts for oil exploration. He also announced Colombia’s accession to the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, whose stated goal is to end any new exploration and production activity.
“Colombia has decided not to sign any more contracts for coal, oil and gas exploration. This does not mean that we will run out of oil, coal and gas, because these fuels are already being explored and there are many exploration contracts in place. What did Pietro say in a panel discussion at COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates: “We don’t want to expand further.”
“For 40 years, Colombia has deepened its economic matrix around extraction, large-scale mining and primarily fossil fuels. There is a contradiction that must now be resolved,” he stressed.
President Pietro was with President Lula on the sidelines of COP 28. Regarding South American presidents, the Brazilian president also met with Paraguayan President Santiago Pena.
