Concession holder RIOgaleão, controlled by Changi Group, of Singapore, wants to continue managing Tom Jobim International Airport, on Ilha do Governador, in Rio de Janeiro.
The company sent a letter to the Ministry of Ports and Airports, the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) and the Coordination and Investment Partnership Program Secretariat last week, formally confirming its interest in remaining in the operation.
However, continuity still needs to go through the decisions of the federal government, which has already shown interest in continuity.
“Continuity at the station now depends on a joint solution of the concession, which must be built with the Federal Government. The formalization of the continuity interest fulfills one of the steps expected in the opinion of the Federal Court of Auditors,” RIOgaleão informed in a note.
Based on the financial imbalance of the contract, as a result of the decline in passenger demand in recent years, in February 2022, Changi expressed to Etihad its intention to re-manage the terminal, which was previously called Rio de Janeiro International Airport. The airport is from Galeo.

Under current lien rules, the federal government can re-offer assets when a return is filed. Before the decision is confirmed, the decision must be consulted by the Federal Court of Audit (TCU) so that a withdrawal can be authorized and re-bidding can be implemented.
Now, the joint solution requires a series of analyses, including the values of the grants and investments stipulated in the original contract. According to the agency, the payments are up to date.
“Riogaleao also announces that it is fully committed to paying the grants,” he stressed, adding that a meeting should be held with the Ministry of Ports and Airports to continue discussions in the coming weeks.

To increase passenger flow at Tom Jobim Airport, in August 2023, the then Minister of Ports and Airports, Marcio France, signed a decision specifying the transfer of some flights from Santos Dumont Airport, central Rio, to Internacional.
The current Minister of the Ministry, Silvio Costa Filho, visited Tom Jobim Airport on the third of this month, where he visited the facilities and was able to monitor the effects of the beginning of the transfer of operations between the two stations, which began in two stages a few days ago.
