(Sputnik) – Ukraine’s former ambassador to the United Kingdom, Vadim Prystaiko, was shocked by the news of his resignation, Ukrainian broadcaster Zaspilne reported on Friday, citing sources. Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fired Prystaikou after he criticized the president’s comments about UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.

The Sun newspaper on Thursday, citing sources, said Bristiko had been warned he could be sacked for his criticism. A source close to the former Ukrainian ambassador in London told Saspiln that Zelensky’s decision to fire him came as a surprise to Prystaiko.

The diplomat was reportedly informed of his resignation on Friday morning while on his way to a small British town to attend a ceremony to mark the opening of a street called Zelensky. Prystaiko’s team did not know whether his resignation was related to Zelensky’s criticism, but his entourage considered such a coincidence strange, the broadcaster reported.

After a NATO summit in Vilnius in early July, Wallace said Kiev was treating its NATO allies like an Amazon warehouse and asked for more thanks for aid already provided. In response, Zelensky quipped that he personally thanked Wallace every morning. Prystaiko criticized Zelensky’s comment on July 13, calling it “unhealthy sarcasm”.
