The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, a new Lord of the Rings game that focuses on the former bearer of the One Ring, was released on Thursday (25) and quickly became the worst rated game of 2023. The title, developed by Daedalic Entertainment and published by Nacon, averages 38 on Metacritic and 42 on OpenCritic, taking the bottom spot on both review aggregator sites.

The PlayStation 5 (PS5) version of the game holds the worst rating position, with an average score of 38 based on 21 reviews from critics. The PC version has a slightly higher average score of 43 based on 12 reviews.
On OpenCritic, which also aggregates reviews with a different average system than Metacritic, the game ranks last at 213, with a score of 42. Other console versions do not have enough ratings to count as average on Metacritic.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum adventure features an original story that follows Gollum’s journey to flee Mordor and search for the precious Ring of Power. The game is based on the books by author JRR Tolkien and features famous characters like Gandalf the Gray and the goblin king Thranduil in history.
The gameplay focuses on stealth, as Gollum is not a warrior, but is able to execute unsuspecting enemies in order to survive. The character also spends the game divided between two characters: the scheming Gollum and the innocent Sméagol, with a system of choices dependent on what each will do.
