The UK announced last Tuesday (23) that it is funding a scientific experiment in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. According to the British Embassy, this is a pilot project that will measure the impact of rising carbon dioxide levels on Brazilian biodiversity. Foreign Minister James Wise was in Manaus, where dozens of towers are being built to pump CO2 into the treetops, and study how the gas is absorbed.

The experiment is called ”AmazonFACE” or ”Free-Air CO2 Enrichment” and will help scientists better understand how the forest responds to high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. CO2 is the main gas causing the greenhouse effect, which accelerates climate change. Major Effects: Global temperature rise, impacts on plant fertilization and water cycle. The aim of the project is to study how biomass will perform with potential fluctuations in climate.

Preliminary results are expected to be published next year and made available to the scientific community. In this way, the understanding of how the Amazon rainforest can “steal” excess CO2 from the atmosphere will be greater, and the biome will be more vulnerable to climate change, the embassy said.

The project was carried out by a combination of scientists from the National Institute for Research in the Amazon (INBA), the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and the British Meteorological Service, the Met Office. In total, it cost BRL 77 million, BRL 45 million from the United Kingdom and BRL 32 million from Brazil. Smart will present its climate partnership with Brazil this Wednesday (24). Later, he returns to the United Kingdom after a trip through the American continent, where, in addition to Brazil, he visited Jamaica, Colombia and Chile.
