The United States and South Korea announce an agreement to counter North Korea’s nuclear threats

US Presidents Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Sok Yul revealed on Wednesday (26) that they have new plans to respond to North Korea’s nuclear threats.

The two met in Washington. Biden said after the meeting that “a nuclear strike by North Korea against the United States or its allies is unacceptable and will lead to the end of any regime that takes such action.”

Yonhap News Agency reported that Biden said that any nuclear attack by North Korea against South Korea would be answered quickly, overwhelmingly and decisively.

Under the new plan, the Americans will eventually take nuclear-armed submarines to the coast of South Korea and train the South Korean military.

South Korea and the United States will form a nuclear advisory group and exchange more information on nuclear weapons and operational plans.

If North Korea attacks, the presidents of the United States and South Korea will consult. “Peace on the Korean Peninsula does not happen automatically,” Yoon said.

Government leaders from both countries have been working on the details of the plan for months and agreed that an “incidental show of strength” and “very clear” US weapons capabilities should be a core aspect of the agreement.

    South Koreans are on alert

These announcements were made to allay South Korea’s concerns about North Korea’s nuclear weapons program and prevent the country from resuming its nuclear program, which it abandoned nearly 50 years ago.

Earlier this year, Yoon said his country was considering developing its own nuclear weapons or asking the United States to redeploy them on the Korean Peninsula.

And under the plan released Wednesday, that won’t happen: Operational control of such weapons would remain under American control and no nuclear weapons would be stationed on South Korean soil. Even Biden stressed this point: “We will not place nuclear weapons on the peninsula,” he said.

However, the United States and South Korea will coordinate more deeply on a nuclear response strategy in the event that North Korea attacks the South.
