LONDON (Reuters) – Premier League clubs have collectively agreed to stop bookmakers’ sponsorship offers on top football kits from the 2026-27 season, the Premier League said on Thursday.

Eight of the 20 clubs in the league currently have betting companies as shirt sponsors, including Newcastle United (Fun88), West Ham United (Betway) and Everton (Stake.com).

The UK government is expected to publish proposed future legislation on regulating betting.

According to a report in The Times, ministers have indicated that the proposal would not include restrictions on shirt sponsorship if a voluntary agreement was reached. Uniform sleeve arrangements will still be permitted, the report added.

“Premier League clubs have collectively agreed to withdraw bookmakers’ sponsorship from the front of club shirts…” the league said in a statement.

“This announcement comes after extensive consultations involving the league, its clubs and the Ministry of Culture, Media and Sport as part of the government’s ongoing review of existing betting legislation.”

To help clubs transition out of betting sponsorship, the collective agreement will start at the end of the 2025/26 season.

The league added that it was working with other sports to “develop a new code for responsible betting sponsorship”.
