The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), through the Secretariat for Strategic Policies and Programs (SEPPE), met with representatives of the United Kingdom’s Department of Net Zero, Nuclear and International (DESNZ) on Friday (24). To present actions developed in the area of climate and sustainability. The subject of climate modeling focuses on adaptation, whose information can support Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) implementation strategies and, in the long term, can be a point of inter-agency collaboration.

DESNZ Director General Lee McDonough and his delegation were welcomed by SEPPE Undersecretary Fábio Larotonda and General Coordinator for Climate and Sustainability Márcio Rojas.

The Coordinator provided major initiatives in the area of climate to provide robust and reliable techno-scientific information for decision making. Among the key actions is the expansion of Brazil’s National Communication on Climate Change Conference. “This is one of the key exercises and it is very relevant due to the non-discrimination of the portfolio in this case, as the MCTI is not linked to the sectoral mitigation targets,” explained Rojas.

The department collaborates with the academic community and has the support of Rede Clima (Brazilian Research Network for Global Climate Change), which brings together about 150 scientists and aims to promote the generation of knowledge and scientific and technological progress. Climate change.

Rojas introduced the National Emissions Registry System (SIREN), which provides an emission profile of all federal units; National Simulator of Sectoral Policies and Emissions (SYNAPS), responsible for designing mitigation scenarios; and platform Adapt Brazil, which provides information on climate risk for all Brazilian municipalities. “AdaptaBrasil’s exercise is a challenge for us because there is nothing international,” said Rojas.

Taking over in November 2022, Mcdonough will be responsible for delivering and implementing the UK’s Net Zero programme, as well as leading international climate policy. Created from the reorganization of the British Prime Minister’s new office in February 2023, DESNZ focuses on the energy portfolio of the former Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). In new missions, it is taking advantage of net zero opportunities to lead the world in new green industries. “It’s wonderful. “I’m very impressed,” Mcdonough told the crowd about the reported plans.
