The first record of a blue lobster in Brazil was recorded in 2019, at Barra Grande beach, in the city of Maragogi. The result was so significant that it was published in an electronic scientific journal, containing technical and geolocation information. As seen in the US and UK, each time an encounter has been documented, the chances of finding one of these are 1 in 2 million.
to Sh 1Professor at the Federal University of Alagoas (Ufal), Claudio Sampaio, biologist and doctor of zoology, explained that the blue color in crustaceans may be related to a genetic mutation, however, there is nothing very clear about the color of lobsters.
“We don’t know anything about the consequences of blue in lobsters, it could be due to their reproduction, although the two captured (the only known ones) were young, probably not reaching sexual maturity,” said the expert on the portal.
Lobsters generally live in coral reef environments, coral reefs and calcareous algae banks, which is very common on the coast of Alagoas, which explains the appearances in the same area.
What is the closed period?
The closed season is the period when hunting, gathering, and fishing for sporting and commercial activities are prohibited or controlled. This year, the current ban on lobster fishing lasts until April. In the case of blue-coloured species, it is recommended that they be notified to the responsible authorities – and always returned to the sea, given their rarity.
“If you accidentally catch a lobster, leave it in the same place. If new blue lobsters (and other exotics) are caught, it is recommended to contact research centers, NGOs and the university. If it occurs in a conservation unit, such as APA Costa dos Corais, it should be notified ICMBio managers”.
