According to the World Cheese Awards held in Wales last Wednesday (2), the cheese produced in Bueno Brando, west of Minas, was deemed one of the best in the world.

Called Lua Ceia, the cheese is produced by the Serra das Andas dairy farm and is of the creamy variety, covered with a thin layer of charcoal (meal), which is aged for three weeks. He won the super gold medal, which is limited to 98 participants in international awards.

The mining company was born in 1983, when 20-year-old miner Airton started a small goat farm. According to the dairy’s website, along with parents Jose and Elvira, the milk was frozen and sold to children with cow’s milk allergies. In 1997, production of cow cheeses such as French Brie and Camembert began.

Awarded at the World Cheese Awards, Lua Chea has a smooth, buttery and slightly sweet taste, sold in round pieces measuring 11cm and weighing around 300g.

Minas Cheese competed against 4,434 products from 42 countries that were analyzed by 250 judges specializing in dairy products. The testing process took place throughout the day.

The Super Jury from 16 countries examined the 98 Super Gold Medal winning cheeses to determine the winner of the British award. The final round of tasting and scoring was performed live in front of an audience. The winner was the French Gruyère type of cheese.
