The High Representative of the European Union, Josep Borrell, stressed in statements after the meeting of representatives of the external relations of the Group of Seven major industrialized countries, Thursday 3, that it is necessary to continue to apply sanctions on the Russian economy. At a press conference, the diplomat also said it was necessary to support the Ukrainian army “as we are doing now”.
“The European Union has already allocated 22 billion euros to support Ukraine. I do not count in this number the military support that member states provide bilaterally. The goal is to provide humanitarian and material support so that the Ukrainians can withstand the winter,” he said.
According to Borrell, winter is coming, and President Vladimir Putin is waiting for “General Winter” to come and support the Russian army. “Now more than ever we have to support Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. They are fighting and defending their country and we have a moral duty to support them,” he said. The Spaniard also noted that foodstuffs and fertilizers are not subject to European Union sanctions and it is not because of the bloc’s sanctions that there is a shortage of food in the world.
This year G7 representatives are meeting in Münster, Germany. The group consists of the United States, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada and the European Union.
