    Ciara is investigating three suspected cases of monkeypox virus (monkeypox) transmission at a prison in the Fortaleza metropolitan area (RMF). Professor Olafo Oliveira II (UPPOO II) prison unit visits have been suspended for at least 20 days, as directed by the health authorities.

    Visits by lawyers and relatives of prisoners have been suspended from Thursday (25) until September 13, 2022. The Secretariat of Prison Administration (SAP) and the Secretariat of Health of Ceará (Sisa) confirmed the information and said, “After detection, the unit’s health team proceeded to isolate suspected patients.”

    SAP informed the Executive Secretariat for Health Surveillance (Sevig) in Sesa, which advised that samples should be collected for laboratory examination, which is already being carried out by the Central Public Health Laboratory (Lacen). Inmates in UPPOO II who shared a cell with suspects are still under observation, as they are not showing symptoms of illness,” according to Volumes.

    Understand how monkeypox is transmitted

    According to the World Health Organization (WHO), monkeypox can be transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected person or animal, or with material contaminated with the virus. The virus can be transmitted from person to person through close contact with infections, body fluids, respiratory droplets, and contaminated materials such as bedding.

    The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) operates in accordance with the procedures of other global health agencies and bodies and continues to monitor the development of the situation through constant contact with the Ministry of Health.

    Reference authorities such as CDC/USA and the UK Health Safety Agency note that transmission of the virus occurs preferentially through infected skin (even if it is not visible), but also through the respiratory tract or mucous membranes (eyes, nose or mouth).

    According to the UK authority, person-to-person spread is uncommon but can occur through:

    • from contact with clothing or sheets (such as bedding or towels) used by an infected person;
    • from direct contact with monkeypox pests or scales;
    • From close exposure to an individual coughing or sneezing with a smallpox rash.

    In this sense, prevention and caution are indicated to avoid transmission by respiratory tract and contact methods, as well as care in handling bedding, towels and sheets used by the infected person. Hand hygiene is recommended in both cases.
