Former President Lula and Nobel Laureates Mairead Maguire and Adolfo Perez Esquivel nominated journalist and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange for the Council of Europe’s Václav Havel Prize.

It is an organization that protects human rights, democracy and the rule of law on the continent. It was founded in 1949 and is headquartered in Strasbourg, France.

The award highlights the work of members of civil society around the world and will be presented during the October PACE session. The winner will receive 60 thousand euros, a trophy and a diploma.

Former President Lula has shown a leading role in defending Julian Assange’s freedom. As for PT, what crime did the founder of WikiLeaks commit?

“We’re talking about democracy here and we’re like, ‘What crime did Assange do?’ It must be asked: President Dilma Rousseff, including many countries around the world, has been deceived”, Lula declared.

UK approves extradition of Julian Assange

The UK government on Friday approved the extradition of WikiLeaks founder journalist Julian Assange to the US. A decision by Boris Johnson’s Conservative government formalized the recognition of British judicial practice two months later. In March, Britain’s Supreme Court denied the journalist the right to appeal against the extradition decision.

“The UK Home Secretary has approved the extradition of WikiLeaks author Julian Assange to the US, where he faces up to 175 years in prison. The decision will be appealed, a dark day for press freedom and British democracy,” the report said. Wikileaks official Twitter profile.

Journalists and human rights organizations have condemned the decision. “Allowing Julian Assange to be extradited to the US would put him at great risk and send a chilling message to journalists around the world,” Amnesty International said in a statement.

Amnesty International is deeply concerned about the situation Assange may face in the US, saying “there is a high risk of prolonged solitary confinement, which would violate the prohibition on torture or other ill-treatment”. “The diplomatic assurances given by the US that Assange will not be held in solitary confinement cannot be taken at face value given the past history. We appeal to the UK to refrain from extraditing Julian Assange so that the US drops the charges and releases Assange,” he added.
