London, May 20 (EFE). On Friday, the British Minister of Health, Sajid Javid, confirmed that 11 more cases of monkeypox had been discovered in the country, bringing the total number of positives for the disease to 20.

The information was provided by a member of the British Executive through a Twitter message.

Javid indicated that he had informed the health ministers of the countries that make up the Group of Seven of all that is known in the United Kingdom about the spread of the virus that causes monkeypox so far.

“Most of the cases are mild, and I can confirm that we are providing more doses of effective vaccines,” the minister noted.

The government has a stockpile of effective vaccines against monkeypox, which has emerged from a species initially discovered in West Africa, according to a report released by the World Health Organization yesterday.

So far, cases of monkeypox have been reported in the United Kingdom, Spain, Sweden, Italy and Portugal, as well as in the United States and Canada. Earlier, France and Germany also confirmed the first positives.

According to the World Health Organization, monkeypox is transmitted through droplets, direct contact with the skin or contaminated objects, which poses an additional risk to children and pregnant women, who can transmit it to their fetuses.

In a report that monitors the situation in the United Kingdom, which does not address other countries, the United Nations agency reported that the variant discovered in the country, which originated in West Africa, has a lethal potential of 1%, while the variant recorded in Central Africa is up to 10%.
