The Brazilian government has announced that it has recovered a 100-million-year-old fossil illegally taken from the country and transported it to Italy. This announcement was made by the Federal Public Prosecutor, who reported that the piece was returned to Brazil on the 16th, before being auctioned off On an Italian site, its value was estimated at 16,800 Brazilian reais (3,000 euros).

The piece is so well preserved that it is possible to see the scales and soft tissues of an animal that lived in the Cretaceous period.
“This is a legacy of the Brazilian nation, and bringing it home will allow the work of Brazilian and international researchers,” Prosecutor of the Republic, Rafael Ribeiro Raiul, said on the MPF website.
Despite the triumph of repatriation, as a result of a process that began in 2020, there is still much work to be done.
According to the MPF, dozens of other similar measures are open in at least six other countries: France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Japan and South Korea. Many of these pieces are displayed in museums, in private collections, or are auctioned off.
