Northern hemisphere nations rallied around imposing sanctions on Russia after the invasion of Ukraine. As part of a broad package of economic embargoes, overflight restrictions were imposed on Russian aircraft and people, which began to be implemented at the end of last week.

The United Kingdom, Poland, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, Bulgaria and Slovenia were the first to ban flights of Russian aircraft over their territories. On Sunday (27), it was the turn of the European Union and Canada to also join the blockade.

“We are closing EU airspace to Russian or Russian aircraft registered or controlled by Russia.”European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at a press conference. Russian aircraft, including private oligarchs, “They will no longer be able to land, take off or fly over the territory of the European Union.”she said this Sunday.

Interestingly enough, the US has so far remained rigid in this regard. Brazil has not yet established itself.

With these restrictions, Russian aircraft are practically prohibited from flying on the western side of the northern hemisphere.as shown in the map below (updated with information from February 27 at 4:30 p.m.).
