The FIA Formula 1 Commission confirmed on Monday (14) that the São Paulo Grand Prix (GP), between November 11 and 13, will host one of the three sprint races (the short races, which take place on the Saturday before the official race, on Sunday) for the 2022 season. The other stages will be in Emilia-Romagna (April 22-24) and Austria (July 8-10).
The sprint lasts a third (in the case of São Paulo, 24 laps) of the official race and sets the starting order for Sunday. Last year, he scored in the top three in the short race. Starting in 2022, the top eight will receive points in descending order (the winner gets eight, the second gets seven, and so on). The day before, on Friday, afternoon workouts would be a sprint classification.
In 2021, Interlagos was the stage for one of the competition’s three sprint races (winn by Finn Valtteri Bottas) and will be the only one to host it again. The other two were at Silverstone (UK) and Monza (Italy), with Dutchman Max Verstappen and Bottas victories, respectively. The short race model is designed to attract more audience and enhance the racing experience on the weekend.
