A massive fire broke out and destroyed the seat of the South African Parliament in Cape Town, Sunday morning (2).
Jean-Pierre Smith, a member of the Cape Town municipal committee responsible for safety and security, said the fire broke out on the third floor of the building, and initial reports indicated it started in an office space and spread towards the gym.
“The roof caught fire and the National Assembly building was on fire,” said a city security spokesman, who called for reinforcements at the scene. He added that “the fire was not controlled and there are cracks in the walls of the building.”

The fire, which spread to the floors of the building, started at about 3:30 a.m. (GMT).
The cause of the fire is still unknown and there are no injuries.
The building in Cape Town has three floors, one of which, which is the oldest, was built in 1884. The newer parts date from the 1920s and 1980s.
Cape Town suffered a massive fire in April on Table Mountain, which borders the coastal city, destroying the treasures of the University of Cape Town’s library.
