A longtime fan of The Simpsons: Hit and Run decided to rework the game in Unreal Engine 5, and Joe McGinn, lead designer of the original title, was impressed with the feat.

Robin Ward, the developer of Unreal, recently became known on his channel. Youtube, after remaking games on Unreal Engine 5. After an improved version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the developer’s latest project features a cool new version of The Simpsons: Hit and Run.

Commenting on the YouTuber’s video, lead designer of The Simpsons: Hit and Run, Joe McGinn said, “What you’ve accomplished is amazing! It really gives a taste of what a complete modern remodel could be. Impressive work!” That was the tribute to a project that apparently took the developer only a week.

Ward kicked off his remake of The Simpsons: Hit and Run with the Springfield game map. After importing the map using a tool created by another developer, Ward used a series of inventive shortcuts to recreate the game’s ancient trappings. Using AI-based image-enhancing software and a bit of DIY photography, he was able to reshape the entire map and give it a more modern feel. The YouTuber even added some simplified trees to give the “new” Springfield from Hit and Run a little more life.

After the map, Ward began work on other elements, with the game’s initial playable character, Homer Simpson, receiving some modifications in the remake. The developer worked on coding advanced character animation and also enabled first person mode — because, as Ward aptly put it, “Why the hell not?”

The developer has also made improved changes to the game’s user interface, added quests and collectibles, extracted audio from the original game for voice work on its characters, and enabled ray tracing. The entire package was then released by Ward as a playable demo. Unfortunately, the developer had to remove the demo due to copyright issues. While you can’t play the modern version of Ward in this classic Simpsons game, you can still watch the full video detailing the changes the developer has made to the game on Reubs’ YouTube channel.

As The Simpsons Hit and Run approaches its 20th anniversary, new fan-made releases may be the closest we’ve come to a true modern remastered. We recently caught up with Simpsons writer Matt Selman, who explained why we won’t see a new print any time soon. Salman explained that though, “I would like to see a modified version of [Simpsons Hit & Run]’, it would be ‘institutionally complex to try to make that happen’.
