Chelsea beat Palmeiras 2-1 on Saturday (12) and won the Club World Cup for the first time. Find out the history of the competition and the tournaments that have already been considered the World Cup.

When CONMEBOL and UEFA started the Intercontinental Cup in the 1960s, the two teams were vying for the title in home and away matches, one in South America and the other in Europe, with the possibility of a third match if necessary. Only in 1968 did the format change to just the overall result of the two games.

The tournament did not transition into the familiar format until 1980, with a one-match decision on neutral ground in Japan, with Tokyo receiving most of them and Yokohama receiving the last three.

In the 1990s, FIFA began working on a project for a legitimate inter-club world championship. The first edition was held in 2000, in Brazil, with the participation of eight clubs – the six champions of the continent, the Brazilian champion representing the host country and the winner of the last Intercontinental Cup.

After failed attempts to host the tournament again, it returned in 2005 in a new form, which we know today, with six clubs – the continental champions and the national champion of the host country.
