Sunak says the flights will take off in 10 to 12 weeks; A bill to send asylum seekers to the African country is being implemented in the country's parliament

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak confirmed the deportation of refugees to the small Central African country of Rwanda this Monday (April 22, 2024). According to the Prime Minister, flights with asylum seekers will depart in 10 to 12 weeks.

The Rwanda Defense Bill is currently before the British Parliament. This Monday (April 22), England's lower house, the House of Commons, rejected 2 amendments to the bill added by the upper house of Lords.

The MPs' amendments were aimed at creating an independent monitoring commission for deportees and exempting Afghans who aided British soldiers from not complying with the new law. The results of the votes were 229 in favor and 305 against and 234 votes in favor and 306 votes in favor respectively.

Thus, after rejection by the House of Commons, the bill returns to the House of Lords.

In a speech this Monday (April 22), Sunak criticized the House of Lords and said that if they do not “insurance” Text, the project would have already started weeks ago.

“Of course it will be later than we would have liked, but we have always been clear that the process will take time and we would have started this process weeks ago if Labor peers had not held up the House of Lords bill for weeks to try to block these flights altogether.”, Said.

The plan, which aims to reduce the number of people entering the UK illegally, has already been unanimously ruled unlawful by UK Supreme Court judges. The country's judiciary believes that sending asylum seekers to the African country would put their lives at risk. (ECHR) European Convention on Human Rights.
