Sputnik Agency – The Court of Justice of São Paulo (TJSP) unanimously decided that Meta Platforms, owner of Facebook and Instagram (the two platforms banned in Russia due to extremism), must stop using this name in Brazil within 30 days.

Following the decision, major technology companies are subject to a daily fine of R$100,000 in case of non-compliance, but they can appeal the decision. The deadline began on February 28, 2024, the date of the court's decision.

According to the newspaper O Globo, the judges of the Court's First Business Law Chamber responded to the request of a Brazilian company with the same name, Meta Serviços em Informatica S/A, which registered its trademark with the National Institute of Technology. Intellectual Property (INPI) since 2008.

In the process, the Brazilian company claimed that it was harmed by its name being associated with major North American technology companies, after it was unjustifiably included in 27 legal cases. Since the lawsuit was filed, this number has increased to 143 cases.

Meta Serviços em Informática S/A also says that its lawyers have already had to participate in 49 hearings to clarify that the company in question is not Meta Platforms.

Furthermore, consumers reached out to its employees via social media and through personal communications due to issues that were actually related to Meta's platforms, the media reported.

When contacted by the newspaper, Meta American did not respond. The sentence recognizes the journey of the company, which was founded in 1990, Telmo Costa, CEO and founder of Meta Serviços em Informática S/A, said in a statement.
