The CEO of Instagram reveals details about the platform’s algorithm

Instagram has become one of the most popular social media platforms in the world, with millions of users sharing photos, videos, and stories every day. However, one of the most interesting and mysterious aspects of Instagram is its algorithm, which determines which posts and content are shown to each user on their feed.

What’s behind the platform’s algorithm is a closely guarded mystery. However, the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, published an article in which he revealed some details of how the technology works.

Although it does not fully explain how to program the algorithm on the social network, the article can give directions to those who wish to gain more access to its contents.

Adam Mosseri explained that Instagram doesn’t have just one algorithm, but it actually has many of them. The AI programmed system determines what content should make it to your feed.

“Each part of the app uses its own algorithm tailored to how people use it. People tend to look for their closest friends in Stories, use Explore to discover new content and creators, and enjoy Reels. We categorize things differently in these different parts of the app.”Mosseri says.

In the bottom line, the algorithm determines what contents should be shown to each user. Thus, the technology sends posts to your application that should be of interest to you, taking into account your behavior on the platform.

Meaning, if you normally like and follow profiles that post content about animals, the algorithm knows that this topic is of interest to you.

The technology also creates database records of your likes, shares, and even the time you usually spend watching a particular photo or video.

“From there, we make a bunch of predictions. These are guesses about how likely you are to interact with a post in different ways. There are about a dozen of them.”Mosseri says.

In sum, the five interactions we look at most are how likely you are to spend a few seconds on a post, commenting, liking, sharing and clicking on a profile picture.

The more likely you are to take an action, and the higher the weight of that action, the higher you will see the post in the feed.”he explains.
