247 – Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, condemned recent US and UK military operations against Houthi targets in Yemen. Nebenzya characterized the attacks as “open armed aggression” and a clear violation of Article 2 of the United Nations Charter. Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Friday, he said the coalition's actions represented another example of joint Western military aggression in the Middle East. Nebenzia argued that the attacks lacked UN Security Council authorization under Chapter VII of the Charter and dismissed the White House's justifications as “pseudo-legal” and uncritical. Military intervention by the United States and the United Kingdom followed warnings from the Houthis, who threatened to launch attacks on Israeli territory and blockade Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The Houthi rebel group has attacked more than 20 ships in the Red Sea since mid-November, according to estimates by the US Defense Department's Central Command. Thursday night's airstrikes using planes, warships and submarines were justified by US President Joe Biden as a response to “unprecedented Houthi attacks” on shipping in the Red Sea, stressing the need for self-defense.
