Researchers revealed alarming new data on Monday (28). Projections indicate that 90% of ski resorts in Europe will see less snow in winter if current levels of greenhouse gas emissions are maintained.

According to a study published in the journal Nature and climate changeBut the outlook is not positive even if the goals of the Paris Treaty are achieved. If the world succeeded in “stopping” global warming at 1.5°C, a third of the old continent’s resorts would still be at risk, especially those at lower altitudes.

    More research results:

    • The study assessed how European resorts would respond if the planet’s temperature rises by 1.5°C to 4°C, the Earth’s surface has already warmed by 1.2°C, generating extreme conditions and increased heat waves.
    • If global warming exceeds 3°C by mid-century, All ski resorts will be at risk of extinction Because of the lack of snowfall, according to the survey.
    • Finally, if the increase were stopped at 1.5°C, as stipulated in the Treaty of Paris, the rate of risk would drop to as low as 7% in the cases of the Swiss, French and Austrian Alps, for example.
    • Scientists expect that we will experience the first 1.5°C warmer year this decade.

Across all mountain regions of Europe, future climate change will result in worse snow conditions in ski resorts than in past decades

Samuel Morin, scientist at Meteo-France and the French National Center for Scientific Research.

The agency report says a palliative solution is the mechanical production of snow France Press agencyBut this production also generates expenses: “Snow production involves investments and operating costs,” commented Hughes-François, study author and researcher at the National Institute of Agricultural Research in France.

Not to mention that artificial snow also contributes directly to global warming, because it requires energy and uses water, the research adds.

It is worth noting that half of the ski resorts on the planet are located in Europe, which generate tens of millions of dollars annually and are very important to local economies.
