More than 1,500 UK app developers have filed a class action worth around $1 billion (£785 million) against Apple This Tuesday (25)
In the process, the programmers claim the tech company is charging unfair fees on its virtual store. App Store. A commission of 15% to 30% is charged by Apple to developers for using the app-in-app payment method.
Apple’s revenue has soared in recent years, reaching about $20 billion a quarter, and critics argue that the high fees hurt consumers and contribute to the creation of a monopoly.
Apple, on the other hand, says it helps developers reach customers in 175 countries and that 85% of programmers using its App Delivery service pay no commission.
Sean Ennis, a professor at the Center for Competition Policy at the University of East Anglia and a former OECD economist, is leading the action on behalf of 1,566 programmers with law firm Geradine Partners.
“Apple’s fees to app developers are high and only possible because of their monopoly on app distribution iPhones This is iPods”, the professor said in a statement.
“The charges are unfair and unfair pricing. They harm both app developers and app buyers.
