The survey was released this Tuesday, 29th, by Viavi Solutions, a company that provides communications networks and services.
China leads the 5G network, with 376 connected cities. Second place is the United States, 284, and third, the Philippines, 95, overtaking South Korea, which now ranks fourth with 85 cities.
It is followed by Canada, Finland, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Australia and Saudi Arabia. The last commercial launch of 5G networks took place in Cyprus, Peru, Russia and Uzbekistan. As a result, more than a third of the world’s countries now have at least one active 5G network.
Currently, in Brazil, companies offer 5G in a mode called DSS, which uses a “piece” of the radio frequency bands in which 4G signals are actually transmitted.
5G DSS is an advance in terms of connectivity compared to 4G, but it’s still less than the ultra-fast browsing and minimal latency, which will come in the “real” 5G and promise to revolutionize communications.
At best, the “real” 5G network could be activated in Brazil in 2022. This still depends on the auction of the 3.5GHz band, which is dedicated to the 5G network. However, there is no deadline for completing the notice yet.
The National Communications Agency (Anatel) sent the notice, in March, for analysis by the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU). But just last week, the regulator finished sending the clarifications the court had requested to issue its opinion. The TCU now has up to 90 days to complete the assessment. Only then will the auction date be set.
